Getting to Nakatsugawa City:

Nakatsugawa City is the starting point for several of our tours, including our Magome to Tsumago Walking Tour and our Nakatsugawa to Magome Walking Tour.

Travelling from outside the Kiso Area:

From Nagoya:
– About 60 minutes by train to Nakatsugawa station. (regular trains or JR Shinano Limited Express trains)

From Matsumoto & Shiojiri:
– About 90 minutes from Matsumoto station ( or 60 minutes from Shiojiri station) by JR Shinano Limited Express train to Nakatsugawa station.

From elsewhere in Japan:
– Getting a bullet train to Nagoya, then travelling on to Nakatsugawa station is usually the quickest option. However, please be sure to check if travel via Matsumoto/Shiojiri might be better for you.

Travelling from inside the Kiso Area:

Travel to Nakatsugawa station is possible from anywhere in the Kiso area via local JR Chuo line trains.

Buses also operate in various parts of the Kiso area – feel free to ask if you need a bit of advice.


Getting to Magome:

Magome is a particularly popular place to stay. It’s also one of the possible starting points of our Magome to Tsumago Walking Tour.

Travelling from outside the Kiso Area:

First, you’ll need to get to Nakatsugawa station (see our information on that here).

Then, you’ll need to get the bus to Magome just outside Nakatsugawa station. The bus station is in front and slightly to the left of you as you leave the station.

Travelling from inside the Kiso Area:


Option 1:
Train to Nakatsugawa station, then a bus from there (see information to the left). Travel to Nakatsugawa station is possible from anywhere in the Kiso area via local JR Chuo line trains.

Option 2:
Bus to Magome from Nagisoeki bus stop (right next to Nagiso station) or from Tsumago bus stop.

Getting to Tsumago:

Like Magome, Tsumago is a very popular place to stay overnight. It’s also one of the possible starting points of our Magome to Tsumago Walking Tour.

Travelling from outside the Kiso Area:

Option 1: Train to Nakatsugawa station (see our information on that here), then bus from there to Magome. From there you can or get a bus (or taxi) to Tsumago.

Option 1: Train to Nakatsugawa station (see our information on that here), then transfer for a train to Nagiso station. e just outside Nakatsugawa station. After that, you can get a taxi or bus to Magome from Nagisoeki bus stop (next to Nagiso station), or walk 40-50 minutes to Tsumago.

Travelling from inside the Kiso Area:


Train to Nagiso station, then a bus from Nagisoeki bus stop (right next to Nagiso station) or from Tsumago bus stop.

Getting to Agematsu:

Agematsu isn’t overflowing with choices for accommodation, but there’s some good places to stay. It’s also one of the possible starting points of our Akasawa Forest Relaxation Tour.

Travelling from outside the Kiso Area:

From Nagoya:
– About 60 minutes via train to Nakatsugawa Station. (regular train or Shinano Limited Express train). Then transfer from there to Agematsu Station (takes about 60 minutes)

From Matsumoto:
– About 90 minutes via Shinano Limited Express train to Kiso-Fukushima Station (regular trains do run, but take a long time). Then switch onto a local JR Chuo line heading south towards Nakatsugawa station (takes about 10 minutes to Agematsu station).

From elsewhere in Japan:
– Getting a bullet train to Nagoya, then travelling on to Nakatsugawa Station is most likely the quickest option.

Travelling from inside the Kiso Area:


Travel to Agematsu Station is possible from anywhere in the Kiso area via local JR Chuo line train.

Buses also operate in various parts of the Kiso area – feel free to ask if you need a bit of advice.


Getting to Kiso-Fukushima:

Kiso-Fukushima has plenty of places to stay, and quite a few options for dinner out. It’s also one of the possible starting points for many of our tours, including our Akasawa Forest Relaxation Tour, Kiso Town Tour, and our Torii Pass Walking Tour.

Travelling from outside the Kiso Area:

From Nagoya:
– About 60 minutes via train to Nakatsugawa Station. (regular train or Shinano Limited Express train). Then transfer from there to local JR Chuo line train heading north towards Matsumoto station (about 80 minutes) (some trains terminate at Kiso-Fukushima Station)

From Matsumoto:
– About 90 minutes via Shinano Limited Express train to Kiso-Fukushima Station (regular trains do run, but take a long time)

From elsewhere in Japan:
– Getting a bullet train to Nagoya, then travelling on to Nakatsugawa Station is most likely the quickest option.
